YM Tiny!

There are a couple of methods / applications that can provide you access to IM on your mobile phone. From WAP access to Yahoo! homepage, then free services such as Fring, Palringo, MovaMessenger, etc., to paid software e.g. Agile Messenger and IM+.

But if you’re using Yahoo! Messenger specifically, you might want to try YM Tiny. I think this is made by Indonesian. (Indonesian-sounding name, I think). It’s Java, so should be available for many phones. Download here (www.orisinil.com/ymtiny).

It’s tiny. Simple. Interface is, well, standard, not too fancy. And does the job (not for heavy duty messenger-ing).

Do I miss my N95?

I just bricked my N95 last week… firmware upgrade went wrong :-) Probably a problem with my power connector, so the phone ran out of juice during the upgrade and… yeah… It is sitting in the Nokia service center at this moment.

As a replacement I got the cute little S60 phone: 6120classic. It is a Symbian, yes, S60 v3. Same browser. Same user interface. Same HSDPA. Synchronization. Same features? It is not as powerful as N95, but it has its own merit. And after a couple of days, I think I can evaluate whether I miss my N95 or whether I can live with this small phone.

Warning: this is not a review. This is also not a fair comparison.

Here’s what I miss from N95:

  1. Camera – video & still. It is a bit slow (too slow, actually), but quality is great. Five Mpix, adequate manual control, clarity of lens. And with the video: VGA recording of MP4 (I just retire my MiniDV handycam).
  2. Music — the standard 3.5mm headphone jack and with that quality of sound reproduction: speaker and through headphone. N95 sound quality is surprisingly quite good (iPod still sounds better, though).
  3. Search, especially the local content search – and now with the 4.0 released, I think would be more useful I can download and install the Search 4.0, having it built-in is probably still better.
  4. Online Sharing – directly send pictures to blogs & flickr (well, Shozu can replace it somewhat).
  5. Built-in Video Center & Podcast (probably can install by myself).
  6. Performance for video playback. This is strange. I can not get my MP4 played smoothly. Do I need to tweak something?
  7. Size… emm… love and hate! Bigger size means bigger screen and better keypad. But on the other hand, N95 is too big to be put in my pocket.
  8. Ngage, I think. Potentially.
  9. Accelerometer. Lightsaber is cool, man… (Although outside the coolness factor, this feature still has to see real apps developed and take the advantage of motion sensor!)
  10. Cool factor, or probably it’s more like the sophistication factor (Coolness is owned by iPhone).

What I do not miss until now:

  1. WiFi and VoIP. I am going to miss it, but not at this moment. Limited WiFi coverage in Indonesia. Battery eating.
  2. Battery life.
  3. GPS. Still unusable here in Jakarta: takes a long time to lock on a satellite and there is no useful map. (Google Map, oneday? Not now).
  4. Size. Love and hate.
  5. Lifeblog. Never use it.

Well, I do miss my N95.

But I can live with this phone. Small & pocket-able. But yet still very functional.

N95 Web Browser Crashed

A nightmarish situation actually, this happened to me yesterday evening. I click the Web icon and nothing happened. The screen just flashed a bit and I was back at the Standby screen. (Opera Mini and other web application worked well nevertheless!)

So today, I google about this. Found out that this is a typical problem that N95 users are experiencing.
Here's a link to Nokia Asia forum.

Remedy: hard reset (backup first!!!).
Do the three-finger salute or *#7780# (*#RST0#).

And from experience, the backup (both PC backup and memory card backup) is not 100% safe… SMS, contacts and few settings are OK, but I lost few of my applications, web feeds, and few others.

To do for today:

  • get the new Gmail 1.5
  • get the new S60 native Google Map Mobile
  • Jaiku
  • Palringo
  • Fring
  • Install YBrowser

BTW I'm running Firmware V12.0.013 19-06-07 RM-159.

IM on my N95: Palringo

Thanks to Anthony (S60tips), now I use Palringo for my instant messenger client on my mobile phone. I need to sign up for an account on their website, download the application, install, and running (well, I still need to enter my login information for various IM services that I plan to use).

Compared to Agile & IM+, this one is not bad at all.

Nicer layout and display. Functional, though I still have to improve my multitap / T9 skills… :-)

Free (at least until now), while Agile & IM+ software cost something.

Palringo supports MSN, AOL AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, XMPP/Google+Jabber, and Gadu-Gadu (never heard of it?).
