Corrinne May: Fly Away

Taken from her website: corrinnemay.com. Singaporean girl. Stays in US I think. About my age. Beautiful voice. This one I caught aired in the radio. I especially love the last line, “I love you too much to make you stay… baby fly away”

FLY AWAY

When will you be home?” she asks
as we watch the planes take off
We both know we have no clear answer
to where my dreams may lead
She’s watched me as I crawled and stumbled
As a child, she was my world
And now to let me go, I know she bleeds
and yet she says to me

You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I’ll be praying every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we’ll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

Autumn leaves fell into spring time and
Silver-painted hair
Daddy called one evening saying
“We need you. Please come back”
When I saw her laying in her bed
Fragile as a child
Pale just like an angel taking flight
I held her as I cried

You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I’ll be praying every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we’ll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

Back to 80′s: I’ve Never Been to Me

<melodrama mode>

It’s Saturday. And my radio is playing another 70′s/80′s song: “I’ve Never Been to Me” Sung by Charlene, as her one-hit wonder. Has a nice melody, mellow, and interesting lyrics, a bittersweet truth about life.

Wikipedia:

The female version is sung to a housewife who wishes that she could trade her everyday life for the exciting, fantastic life led by the singer. The singer tells of some of the highlights of her life, but the tone is bittersweet and she wishes that someone had told her what she is telling the listener. She has learned what is important, but now it is too late. She finds her life hollow and without purpose, having lost her real self years before — the “me” she has never been to, is the life that she would have led if she hadn’t been lured away by false ideas. (Link)

My wife knows this song as well, interestingly, the Chinese/Mandarin version of it. Probably from the late Teresa Teng!

There’s an excerpt from last.fm as well (link).

Another song that I like is “I Know Him So Well” – Whitney Houston feat. Cissy Houston (from the album “Whitney”) or the one sung by Elaine Paige. Whitney version not available in last.fm (not found yet); Elaine’s can be found there.

(Turns out to be a song from a musical, as Wikipedia said)

CD: Simfoni Negeriku

I was browsing through my CD collection, looking for CD’s that I have encoded into MP4 or ALAC. And I found this rare piece from year 2000. I wonder how many of you guys have this CD: Addie MS Simfoni Negeriku. A rare orchestra performance of Indonesian’s national anthem and other patriotic songs.

From Twilite Orchestra (Addie’s orchestra) website:

Simfoni Negeriku is an album of Indonesian national songs from the era of struggle for independence. This album was intended to promote and preserve the values of these Indonesian national songs among today’s generations.

The recording was made in a recording studio in Australia, in cooperation with the Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra. In the album you will hear various compositions by Wage Rudolf Supratman, R. Kusbini, Alfred Simandjuntak, Hs. Mutahar, Ibu Soed, Ismail Marzuki, Sudharnoto performed by Rita Effendy, Agus Wisman and the Twilite Chorus. This also is a special recording of the Indonesian anthem Indonesia Raya in its original orchestration by Jos Cleber.

Program: Indonesia Raya (W.R. Supratman), Bagimu Neg’ri (R. Kusbini), Bangun Pemudi Pemuda (A. Simandjuntak), Hari Merdeka (Hs. Mutahar), Syukur (Hs. Mutahar), Tanah Airku (Ibu Soed), Indonesia Pusaka (Ismail Marzuki), Mars Pancasila (Sudharnoto), Rayuan Pulau Kelapa (Ismail Marzuki), and Berkibarlah Benderaku (Ibu Soed).

Beautiful composition and arrangement… so next time you need good soundtrack for 17 Agustus-an, you know whom to call… :-)
